Become a qualified English teacher with International House Newcastle (IHN) in partership with England Education Colombia (EEC). Our CELTA teacher training course provides trainee teachers with the skills and knowledge to teach English to speakers of other languages.

Together we have developed a unique CELTA certification course based on the interests and needs of highly accomplished English teachers.

What is CELTA?

The CELTA (Certificate in Training English to Speakers of Other Languages) is the most widely recognized English teaching qualification in the world and will enable you to teach English as a Foreign Language anywhere in the world including language schools in English speaking countries (UK, USA, Canada, etc.). As the qualification is awarded by Cambridge ESOL, part of the world famous University of Cambridge, you can rely on its quality and recognition.

About the CELTA Course

The CELTA course at IH Newcastle (in partnership with England Education Colombia) consists of 120 hours of live synchronous online lessons via Teams, including tuition, observations of experienced teachers, 6 hours of teaching practice, teaching support and feedback. You will also need to spend time on top of that on self-study, preparing lessons and writing assignments.

Tuition

You will participate in workshops and seminars, focusing on learner awareness, language analysis, phonology, methodology, and career development, using the Cambridge Assessment VLE.

Support

Throughout the course, your tutors will provide you with ongoing support. You will also receive at least one individual tutorial during the course in which you will be given an indication of your progress.

Who is CELTA for?

People with high quality English teaching experience or people starting a career in English Language teaching. You may also be considering a career in English language teaching and view CELTA as an entry into a good teaching position in another country. Alternatively, you may be a considering applying for a better position and increase your income in your country or abroad.

What does CELTA involve?

IH Newcastle and ECC offer a unique 16 week (part-time) online course, qualifying trainees to teach English as a foreign language.
YOUR COURSE WILL:
– Explain the principles of effective teaching.
– Provide a range of practical skills for teaching English to
adult learners.
– Give you a hands-on teaching practice.

Employability

Open up a hole world of exciting teaching opportunities! IH Newcastle and England Education Colombia are able to put you in contact with language schools around the world including UK, Canada and USA institutions, once the course begins, to aid your job search. The tutors will offer you employability advice near the end of the course.

Work and live around the world

Many people become English language teachers so that they can live and work abroad. Getting your CELTA certificate is a great way to build confidence and gain experience, which makes it easier to find work in another country. The opportunity to work around the world is what motivates many teachers to do the CELTA training. You might work for a private language school abroad. Roles often ask for professional worldwide recognized certificates like CELTA.

Teaching Practice

The teaching practice sessions form a key part of the course. You will teach classes of international students and gain a genuine experience of the teaching and learning process. Each teaching practice session, you will be provided with planning support from your tutor beforehand, and will receive feedback on your teaching afterwards. By the end of the course, you will have taught at two levels and have completed a total of 6 hours of teaching (in compliance with Cambridge guidelines).

Commitment & Professionalism

The CELTA course is very intensive and Cambridge requires that you complete every aspect of the course, and have 100% attendance of online sessions. You will need to dedicate time to lesson planning and writing assignments in the evenings and at weekends too. As working alongside and learning from colleagues is a key part of teaching, all trainees need to demonstrate a professional attitude and work constructively with others, particularly those in their tutor group.

Application Process

To apply, please send complete the online application form. If your application has been accepted, we will invite you to an interview. If your interview is successful, we will offer you a place on the following course. Course fees can be paid in full with a 10% discount or in 3 monthly instalments. Initial payment need to be paid 15 working days before the course start date to confirm your place on the available course.

Please note that course fees are not refundable. In the event of a candidate withdrawing from the course once it has started, England Education Colombia and International House Newcastle cannot refund fees or offer a place on a subsequent course without payment of further full fees. If you pay, and decide to cancel before the course start date, this needs to be done in writing before the application deadline, in order to allow another candidate to take your place.
